3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
there are 3 different engine model for this generation:
4cyls - 5sfe - from 92-96
6cyls - 3vz - from 92-93
6cyls - 1mz- from 94-96
Thus the auto trans wont be the same ...
I thought that the 1mz was 95-96 and the 3vz was 92-94.

Since he has the I4, it should all be the same...so he can get one from any 92-96, and more into the Gen4 also, if Im not mistaken.
The automatic I4 has two transmission types, the only difference being external wiring.
The mounting mechanicals, axle locations, etc. are the same.
The 92 and 93 (maybe some of 94's) have an connector on the rear (firewall side by the fender and a narrower connector on the front side by the shifter cable.
My guess for the 95 and 96 (maybe some 94's) is that they re-routed wiring internally to get rid of the rear external electrical connection and place it on a wider connector by the shifter.
Also the elctrical connectors for the starter are different.
The short answer is that the trannys fit, but the wiring harnesses are different.

E153 for the Manual V6 and IIRC S54 for the Manual I4.
I'll set the record strait, for the I4 the manual trans was the S51 (S54 has it's shifting levers relocated for the MR2)
For the couple of rare V6 with the 5 speed, they came with the E53 and some REALLY rare ones (SE's, Lexus) they have the E153(that's the one you can get an LSD).

Hope this clears up things a bit...
the lexus es300 has the E53 as does the SE. should put that in a sticky by itself
so, i need a 92-93 trans then? mine wont move in drive or any other gears but reverse.
I4 - Auto - yes. You can check the 94 by eyeball, if it has the extra connector on the rear of the transaxle by firewall and close to the fender, then it will be the same as the 92/93.
Not sure where the 94 transaxles fit, whether they made internal wiring changes to the transaxle before 94, during 94 or after 94. You can tell by the extra connector at the rear and the width of the wide connector by the shifter (front of transaxle). If the 94 front connector is the same width as yours then it will fit the 92/93, if wider then it fits a 95/96.
Somewhere - I don't know where - there must be a list of Jap and NA VIN numbers that shows the transmission differences.
Good luck.
