Replacing the valve cover

Well, unfortunately my valve cover has a crack in it and needs to be replaced, since oil's starting to seap through. It seems like a very hard part to find without going to the dealership. The dealership wants something like $300 for one (which is absurd considering I can buy the whole engine used for $650), and most junkyards won't take them off. It's like I'm in a lose lose situation. Does anybody happen to know where I can get one of these used or cheap aftermarket?

It's for a 93 Camry LE V6 3.0L. Thanks.

I found one on ebay, and it says it should fit, but it looks different. The oil cap is in a different place although the shape looks similar.

Hmmm. This is the engine I have and the valve cover looks a lot different.

That vintage of Camry should be in pick your part places, where they let you in to take what you want. Maybe you're choosing the wrong wrecker to go to.

depending on where the crack is... why don't you take it to a local machine shop and see if they can't weld it for you.

I would, but the crack is right on the edge near one of the bolts.

That's a good idea. It's hard to find those kind of wreckers these days it seems. I will keep looking. Thanks!

I have a hairline crack on my valve cover, not near any bolting holes (5S FE) and am planning on brazing it together in a few weeks. I am involved with a deck project and my garage is full of wood and tools at the moment.

You should try the welding / brazing option at a local machine shop. Even if entire piece of metal to falls off (separates) the machine shop would weld and regrind that area to match.

That is the 3VZ-FE (says on the timing cover). I guess you have a 1MZ-FE? Try other wreckers. With the self serve, they usually have cars out for you to pick at (inc engine bits) and keep the good engines (complete) in a room.

My engine is the 3VZ-FE in the picture. I'm guessing that other valve cover is from a 1MZ-FE. Don't Lexus ES300s also have a 3VZ-FE?

Possibly, i know for sure they had the 2VZ's(2.5L v6). If they did, it'll be a on the '2nd generation' ES300's.

The '92 and '93 camry and ES300's used the 3VZ engine. The engine pictured is the 3VZ and the valve cover looks right. Maybe post up a pic of your engine? I've neer seen the 3VZ with the oil cap any other place than it shows in the picture.

Ok, I ended up getting one from a junkyard that the guy guaranteed would fit. It looks like the one on ebay with the oil cap on the right hand side, although it's different from the one on my engine. I checked it with my gasket and it's a perfect fit. Strange that they have 2 different versions of the valve cover for the same engine. I'll post a picture when I replace it. My engine looks exactly like the one in the picture above.
