3rd Generation cluster / sensor problem

92 Camry V6 LE

My speedometer is real off and I thought that by changing the cluster it would solve the problem, but when I swapped clusters my speedometer on startup just starts bouncing.

I want to make sure, is it a sensor problem?
Where is the sensor located? I might head to the junkyard and just take it off a busted cam.

Your speedometer sensor is most likely the problem. It is plugged into your transmission and has a three wire harness connector. You can try a junkyard part but you may end up with the same problem.

ok ive checked around my transmission and only found one plug with 2 wires and was located on top of the tranny under the throttle body. im thinking this is the sensor but i looked on a database for repair manuals and it only shows that the speed sensor is located here:

im really confused right now. i dont want to be spending excess money on replacing the wrong sensor.
much help appreciated. im going 50 mph and it only shows 25 on my speedo

That's the wheel speed sensor for the ABS system. It's got nothing to do with the speedometer. Not sure, but I think the speed sensor for the speedo is on the transmission somewhere.

ah yes..thats what my friend was trying to explain to me.
but nobody knows the exact location of the sensor?

edit:
i found a diagram online but it shows two speed sensors
one says regular speed sensor and the other is speed sensor (for ECT)

heres the link: http://www.autoshop101.com/forms/92camry.pdf (page 9)
(i think it would be useful for other 3vzfe owners, thats why im posting it up.)

so which is it?

Unfortunately, page 9 is for the 5S-FE not the 3VZ-FE. The speed sensor on your trans should be near the differential with the connector facing the firewall. You will need to get under the car to replace it.
