Header Pipe O2 Sensor

I have a 1994 Camry with V6 engine and have replaced the exhaust header Y pipe between the exhaust manifolds and the catalytic converter. I did not re mount the old sheet metal heat shielding and fiber glass insulation over onto the new header pipe. Now I am getting a Check Engine Light probably from one of the O2 sensors. My question is this, does the sheet metal shielding and insulation have to be mounted onto the new pipe to keep the pipes hot for the O2 sensors to function correctly? Thanks.
