Do you hear your fuel pump when you turn your key?

I'm trying to diagnose a problem (posted in the general Camry discussion forum). One symptom is that I don't hear the whirring noise that I would expect from the fuel pump priming when I turn my key to On position. Also, after inserting fuel pressure gauge I also see the pressure in the system drop from 50psi down to 0 the instant I turn off the engine. I would expect it to stay pressurized though.

Can someone comment on these two observations? Is my fuel pressure regulator misbehaving?

Can someone let me know if their car makes an audible whirring sound from the fuel pump when the turn the key to the On position?

Thank you!

Start the engine and squat down close to the rear driver side tire and you can hear a slight high pitch whine.

Thanks for the replys, It looks like camrys dont prime the fuel pump untill cranking acording to all of you and alldata. Their not like chevys or fords where they prime for two seconds when the key is on. I was working on a no start and I thought there might be something wrong with the fuel pump or relay because I didnt hear it prime but it turned out to be the timing. Hopefully this thread will help others
