Unhappy Who Picks Up The Bill?

hello.

94 Toyota Camry (5S-FE)

so i have a mechanic next to my job and he had a friend that crashed they camry from the back and was selling the engine. and he refered it to me and basically got me the engine for 150.

that was like 6 months ago. the engine sat still for about ah year.

so with my car about 2 weeks ago. the transmission died. and i took it to the mechanic and he did the job and to make his life essier said to put the new engine in since mine was trowing out white smoke.. so said ok and he took the engine that was sitting still for ah year and put it in with the transmission that he got..

the car started with no problem .. the down side from the start..

the listers were sounding
the water was dirt orange.
they did not switch the transmission filter.

i asked hima bout these things and he said that nothing would happen

so hear is what happen the car ran 107 milles before everything exploding. the radiator and engine..and who knows what else..

the car lasted 24 hrs.

so he is asking me for money to redo the piston rings on the original engine.

my question is should i give him more money to fix it or should he putt the money for everything?

Anytime you buy a used part your taking a chance. And with a used engine your taking a huge chance. That should have been explained to you beforehand. The fact that the engine sat for a year dosent help either. You rolled the dice and lost, so I would say your stuck with the bill.

Unless you have something in writing , giving some type of warranty or he offers to take care of it you are out of luck.

You always take chances on these types of deals and sometimes they bite you.

I agree here. Unless you're given a warranty (some "new" used cars don't come with warranty), then it may be difficult to get reimbursement.

However, if you have a receipt, especially with date and mileage, for the work done and he didn't explicitly said "no warranty", then maybe small claims court. See if the judge would agree on implied warranty on a big ticket item like an engine and transmission.

You foot the bill. You're the one who wanted the engine. You're the one that took the chance. Unless there was some guarantee he gave you, or unless he mis-represented the condition of the engine, he has no obligation to pay for your repairs.
