3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I have a 94 camry le with a 2.2, at take off it has a little hesitation then takes off and runs real smooth. It only does this when you take off from a dead stop. I just changed the fuel filter since it had 40,000 miles on it. That did not fix the problem. The spark plugs & wires have 40,000 miles on them. I'm considering changing these out since they are really due & not very costly before I take it to the shop. I run only BP gas & also run Lucas fuel treatment with every tank of gas. I'm considering a can of Sea Foam just in case the gas may have a little water in it. Anybody had this problem like this or any ideas on what else I should try ?
If your worried about water in your gas, you should run a bottle of iso-heet in the tank. I doubt water in the gas. You would be having more than just a little hesistation. You should Seafoam DeepCreep the TB and run some regular Seafoam through the brake booster. Change your distributor cap and rotor if they've been on there longer than the current set of plug wires and spark plugs.

i had the same exact problem a couple weeks ago. does your car stalll out and die when almost coming to a dead stop, or gliding around a turn below 10 mph? cause mine did that. i changed the fuel filter... but to no avail did that help my problem. then i changed the spark plugs. that didnt help either, however a tuneup was needed badly on my car. afterwards I listened to the car with the engine on and hood up and discovered a vacuum leak (which fixed my problem). the very skinny hose with black plastic around it at the top of the engine which connected the throttlebody (where it says 2200) to something mounted to the firewall, which had a crack in it by the very end.
so open your hood, and with the engine on listen carefully for loose air.

"The spark plugs & wires have 40,000 miles on them"
What kind of plugs and wires would used 40,000 miles ago? Cheap plug wires can last as little as 1 year or 20,000 miles. OEM wires can last a very long time without a problem. I have a 94 XLE 4 cylinder 2.2 with the original plug wires at 90,000 miles and no problems. The plugs were changed at 60,000 miles with the plugs recommemnded in the owner's manual. How old is the cap and rotor?
The car does not stall out & die. The cap , rotor, & wires have 40,000 miles on them and our 4 years old. What Brand, I know the wires are Bosch & the plugs are NGK.Not sure about the cap & rotor. Its just a sligh hestitation from a dead stop, after that the car runs perfect, smooth, & when you kick it down in passing gear it runs good too.
Well, I have figured out the problem. It appears that the Bosch plug wires that have 40,000 miles on them took a dump. They started to crack down inside the head & were arcing. The NGK plugs that had 40,000 miles on them too didnt look all that bad, probably could have gone another 20,000 miles but I changed them out as well. Car is fixed.
Hesitation is often wiring.. The tanks are big in these things, I slosh the heet in, before winter even hits.., hint, condensation season is a good time to do it, water in, water out ..
Don't run anything, just keep gas in it, change the oil frequently.
