From what I heard, he was missing a lug nut and the front driver's side wheel came off. Good to hear that's he's okay and this didn't result in something worse. Not sure why the lug nut came off, but maybe it was loose and/or overtightened.
how does an over tightened lug nut cause the wheel to come off?
Overtightening the lug nut can strip the threading. That's why it's recommended to tighten the lugs at factory specs. Due to the amount of stress that's put onto the wheels/lugs/etc during acceleration, braking, cornering, etc., I would really want to be certain that everything is tightened the right amount. I wouldn't want to imagine the outcome of a wheel coming off while driving in heavy traffic, in the mountains, or any other condition for that matter.

i was driving around and felt a shaking... pulled into a parking lot and check my car out, was missing a lug nut, so jacked the car up and re torqued everything down. drove down the street, and felt the same shudder again, and literally 2 sec before i came to a complete stop i saw the wheel pulling away infront... so the wheel won the race haha. i'm now missing a stud and two lugs... found the other 3, pretty much stripped off the other studds but yea...
i'm about to jackt he car up... i may have parts for sale... i'm actually looking for a new car...
only paid 2k for the camry over 3 years and 60kmiles... she's been through alot...
lo... aww :-/ R.I.P.

that is a lot of damage for losing a wheel. a buddy of mine lost a wheel his g35 (while on the highway) and the only damage was a sheared wheel stud, rotor and mudflap. i think a rotor shield as well. the fender was scuffed with rubber but no bends or paint damage.
