3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Had some questions regarding HG replacement on the 3vz-fe...
How many miles have you'll gotten off a head gasket replacement on this engine?
What head gasket should I use for this engine? Any particular brand?
Is head warpage likely on an engine that leaks coolant very slowly? I dont have to fill it that often...maybe once every couple weeks it will take less than a quart?
What about the block? Has anyone ever had a block on this engine crack due to head gasket failure? What about warping of the block?
I ask all these questions because Im not sure if I want to go through the trouble or just replace the whole engine or replace the car. Im just trying to get a feel as to how head gasket replacements have gone with this engine. I already have to replace the tranny, so you can see my delima.
Thanks!

I replaced mine back in 03, over 30k miles later no problems with the gaskets. My engine had been badly overheating for months and finally blew the rear gasket. Both heads were fine, minimal warping machine shop said they would not need any work other than resurfacing, the block was fine.
It would have to be a pretty catastrophic failure to damage that heavy iron block.

I had the heads fully rebuilt and ported, cost $730 for both. Used OEM gaskets, the gaskets NAPA carries have really good reviews too (Nitroseals.) Don't use Ebay or other cheap gaskets.
