3rd Generation Diagnosis Problems

O.K. so I am at a complete lost right now with this car. Here's what I have right now, and please any input is valued:

1st off, I have been driving around for the longest with the check engine light on, which is due to the VSS sensor on the transmission. I have changed the timing belt, water pump, cap, rotor, wires, and plugs. The car for some reason always had a little ruff idle at a standstill. However it drove with no problem for the most part. I started to notice a little hesitation developing whenever I got to around 2500 3500 rpm, but would quickly disappear. It did get bad to one point that I just floor it and it went away completely, as it just needed to be blown out one good time.

Than the crappy night happpen:

I was leaving work at night, start the car and took off. I had gotten to my first light and notice a heavy ruff idle took off in 1st gear and was ok than shift into 2nd and gave it gas and heavy hesitation hit. Came to a stop sign, and now the car seem like it wanted to shut down, however I gave it more gas and it came back up. Took off again and now in 1st gear and now I'm getting hesitation in which I had to push in my clutch to let the motor catch itself before shutting off. I pulled over in a parking lot and it died, I started back up and had to give it gas which it hesitated heavy and shut back down under regular idle. I pop the hood to try and see if there was anything special and the first thing I notice was my exhaust manifold was glowing red. I ended up getting it towed because it would not start any more.

I check the codes for the check engine light and just got the VSS code. I had thought that maybe the cat was clog and so I disconnect the exhaust system before the cat just to see if I could get anything, but no dice. It’s getting fuel and spark but just would turn over.

Help please because this is killing me

My first thought would be ignition system components. Plugs, wires, distributor cap, rotor and possibly the coil inside the distributor. They are the most common problem areas when a car starts missing on acceleration.

I see by your profile you have a 95 with the 4 cylinder 5SFE engine. In the future you would get more responses to your threads of you listed the year, engine and current mieage, along with anything that has recently bene done to the car.

Thanks fellas for the input, sorry about the lack of year and mileages. I have looked over and over the forum for input just to help trouble shoot this problem. What I don't understand is why haven't I gotten any other codes other than the vss.

mileage is 184xxx
