3rd Generation 1996 Camry le v6 OBD Code 0402

Cannot smog (passed emissions with 250,000miles, but failed due to check engine light) due to a trouble code 0402 - Generic EGR Flow Excessive. The car runs fine, maybe a bit rough at times, but never stalls or has a tough time starting.

I have read that it can be one of three things, EGR Valve Sticking, EGR vsv... or some other sensor...any other leads? I have looked into similar posts/threads involving this problem, but am a bit confused due to conflicting solutions and the many ways it took people to tried (and often failed) to fix problem.

Thank you for any help.

if the car idles and runs fine then its likely the sensor is either dirty or bad.

Which sensor are you referring to?

its going to be the egr position sensor. its the little button looking thing on top of the egr. take it off, should be 3- 6 or 7 ml bolts...

after its off check in side, the valve should be flush with the bottom of the egr plate. if so the change the position sensor, its only a $40 part. if the car is running rough at idle then take the egr off, its the cast iron piece held on by 5 - 10mil bolts(3 in the front 2 in the rear). you'll have to be careful taking it out cause dropping it becomes a pain to get it out...

that should take you 10 min... the bottom bolt in the rear u can't see... just have to get a small ratchet and a 1.5" extension. having a lub like tri-flow or wd40 might be useful.

after the egr is off taking throttle body cleaner that's sensor safe and spray it into the egr and into the hole the egr gases enter the throttle body... take the intake off and spray into the throttle plate into the throttle body as well

these are the steps i took and my car runs fine. no rough idle, restored power and clean emissions... :-) have fun the whole thing should take you about 1.5 hours depending on oh effective you use your time ha ha

Hi, my camry 1996 LE, I4, had a similar problem. I had an engine check light on for at least a year. Recently, I have borrow a code reader from a friend. The code says EGR insufficient flow. Which of the 3 things in the EGR system is mostly broken? My friend told me to tackle the VSV. He had a used vsv and gave it to me. I replaced the VSV and resetted the code. The Engine light was off. My car passed the smoke inspection 2 weeks ago.
