Check engine light on for EGR code finally fixed!

My mom has a 2001 Camry and the check engine light was on. The code was for the EGR valve. She had two different shops mess with the EGR valve and the light kept comming back on. She paid over $800 and several years trying to get it fixed.

Finally she had to register it in another state to pass inspections.

It turned out that it was the vacum switching valve that was causing the EGR to malfunction and set the code. This was finally the answer and was diagnosed by a Firestone shop.

damn... that sux... thats why i spent my time researching on causes and bought a obdII code reader... what $800 would've been only cost me $120

$80 for the reader
$40 for the part...

I'm not surprised, nobody seems to know how to work on these things. When they do they want to charge you allot and then fix nothing, or only half the stuff that's broke! Those mechanics just want to bill time and not do anything! Maybe, the toys, are just to complicated or something.

the catch 22. a car thats desnt need alot of repairs is tricky to diagnose when it does brake.

every little engine problem ive had, though few and far between, has had at least 3 possible causes.
