98 Safety recall for the brake pedal?!

After having issues with my cruise control, I finally drove the car at night and noticed my brake lights were on almost half the time when I don't have my foot on the pedal causing the cruise to not work and to piss off all drivers around me lmao!

I can pull it up with my foot the tiny mm it take to make it go off but this seems serious. Was there a safety recall for this?

There's no safety recall in respect to your problem. You simply need a new brake light switch. With a bad one, your brake lights will stay on and you will have trouble with the cruise control. Cruise works with the same switch that turns on your brake lights.

Here is what one looks like: Beck Arnley 2011566 (w/ cruise control, $16.45+shipping). Pick one up at your local parts store, I'll say.

Haynes manual or a mechanically inclined friend should be able to help. It's above the brake pedal under the console.

So then I presume that this switch is what has a spring loaded shaft which helps push the brake pedal up that last tiny bit to make the lights go off?

I wonder if I can just take mine apart and fix the spring inside since mine is working switch wise, just the pedal is not lifting up all the way. I'm literally talking like the last mm or so.

Pardon me there. I caught 96paseo's post and quickly posted the picture of the brake light swtich without addressing your question.

No, the brake light switch isn't heavy enough to "push" the pedal up. You have to look at a return spring and pivot/bushing to make sure they're ok.

If spring and pivot/bushing are OK, then you adjust the distance between the brake light swtich and the pedal. Otherwise you may have to buy new bushings. I'd think the pivot pin and spring would still be good.

See Autozone for free repair guide with registration.

You're welcome. Do inspect the switch carefully. Replace if there is any doubt. It's a cheap part and you don't want a marginal switch there.
