3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I couldnt find this question posted anywhere, so I'm askin' it.
Im thinking of installing a simple plug and play HID kit on my 2000 camry 4 cylinder. Will I need to change a fuse or anything like that, and if so, could someone point me in the direction of something that would tell me what to do specifically? Thanks

No, plug and play systems are designed to do just that.
You should not need to change any fuses or wiring for that mature. The reason being that HIDs draw about half of the current that regular halogen lamps do.

Okay thanks. Thats what I though, I just wanted to make sure

The reason there are worries of fuse and wiring and such is that all HID systems will draw a lot of current - up to 15A each side - during the first few seconds of turning on. After that the current slowly decreases to about 2/3 of a regular bulb. That's the measurement from mine.

There are no simple plug and play HID systems. If you do take the plunge for the HID kit, you will need to purchase an HID relay kit to go along with it. Also, you will most probably have to aim the headlight DOWN afterwards as to not blind other drivers. The thing about HID's is the start up current. It's pretty darn high and that's where the biggest risk of frying your stock wiring is, hence the placement of a relay kit for HID's.

^^^ I'm not sure I understand the question but I will answer to the best of my understanding. If you are refering to the voltage surge, which Gen the car is really doesn't matter, it's simple electronics. If you are buying a 100$ HID kit, a 5$ relay won't hurt. All electronics set aside, the next big worry is glare. I saw a poorly installed HID kit the other day and let me tell you, her must have been doing some real squirrel spotting You would think he had his highs on or something. To solve the glare, simply lower the headlight beam. If your gen 3 has a similar headlight design as my 3.5, which I'm guessing it does, it's that little phillips head screw on the outside of the headlight.

i meant what's the chances of frying my stock wiring
I'm not really sure what are the odds of frying it, but all you need is once!! Save yourself the trouble, spend the 5$ and the extra 30 seconds installing it. It just might save you a lot of money and a major headache down the road...

It's a 9006 HID relay kit, the ebay one's shipping is 10$ and he's selling the kit for 1$ Do your research, but you are looking for something like that. It takes it's power from the battery like I said before, uses the headlight harness as just an on/off switch and not the power source, and will ground at the light. It only hooks to the positive end of the battery. Here is the install sequence: Headlight harness to HID relay to ballast to HID light. Essentially, you install it before the HID kit
