3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I got a CEL and I had the code pulled and it was the O2 front bank heater failure. So I replace the front(location wise) O2 sensor. Nope, not the right one. Ok so then I get the rear(location wise) and that was an interesting thing to replace. I almost had to pull the passenger seat. I have to say that that was the first time that I have had to touch the interior when replacing an engine sensor! Anywho, after both were replaced, I can feel a difference in the car. I know its not a placebo effect. Before I had a bit of a lag when initially applying the gas, but now it feels like the throttle is right there! I love it! The car just feels so much better! Surprisingly, they were the original O2 sensors! I have 193K too! Not too shabby!

Ok, so Now that I have put a few miles on the new O2 sensors, my CEl is right back on. I am getting an O2 sensor heating element failure. Wouldnt that be in the O2 sensor and replaced when the O2 sensor was replaced? I have to pass emissions soon, so I need to find the solution. Anyone else have any ideas?

P0135 is a malfuntion in sensor 1 bank 1. That is the only O2 sensor that you didn't change and it's located between the engine and the firewall. You need to access it from the bottom of the car. It is the same part as the one you see in front as you put it. I know where you are, I was in the same boat a couple of months ago!! This website should be of great help: http://www.camrystuff.com/index.php?page=Gen3_Manuals

^^ Yup, that's exactly it. There are 2 before the catalyc converter, one of which is right in front of you when you pop the hood, the other is in a similar setup stuck between the engine and the firewall and the third is the downstream one, the one with the sensor plugged in below the passenger seat. In your case, you simply forgot to change one.

Great! I am so glad someone knew!! I was going nuts trying to figure out what was causing this code! Glad to know there was just one I missed! Well there goes another 100 bucks!

No problem! Just make sure you stick a denso sensor, and none of that bosch stuff... Don't get me wrong, Bosch is good, but the European car makers talor their engines to bosch, the japs tailor it to denso. Denso is a tad bit pricier, but as you stated so well, 193k miles is not bad at all!! I pulled 205k miles out of mine before they went bad...
