I am wanting tong about find out what some of you are paying to buy parts and doing your timing belt job yourself. I am thinking about having the stealership do it. What have some of you paid at the steaership or an Indy shop? I remember seeing that it was around 500 bucks.

Stealership charges 700$ in my neck of the woods, I purchase the parts myself and had my friend, who's a certified toyota tech do it in his spare time for me at a nominal fee, something like 50$ and a case of beer afterwards, but he owed me the favor... Parts are relatively cheap, I forget how much I payed, it's been over 1 year since I did my last timing belt(did it at 181,XXX miles)
Edit: forgot to mention, you should change up plugs and maybe consider a new water pump to go in there since the coolant will be drained

Yeah, plus I have already changed, but if I am going to be doing a TB job, waterpump is second on the list of parts. My problem is that I am just not that familiar with Toyota. Now Audi, I could do that job in my sleep. So least to say I am hesitant in doing the job myself.

I never asked, is this a 1MZ-FE, 3VZ-FE or a 5SFE?? Cause if it's 5FSE, than you can do that in a coma if you've done an audi TB before!!! There is a write-up for the 5SFE timing belt, just search it and you;ll come across it, it's rather nice and elaborate and has plenty of pics.

Its a 1mz-fe, and I looked at the underside of the car and there isnt much room at all! Thats when I would almost pay someone else to deal with that problem!!

Yeah I know what you mean, I have a 1MZ-FE too. It is do-able, but when my friend the toyota tech did it last year I think it took him sonething like 5 hours. It's up to you, it's a learning experience!!! 700$ was too much for me!! Parts are cheap, it's the 90$/hour labor rate that will kill you...

With the economy the way it's been mechanics have been busy, up until now. With the new clunker trade in government motors, mechanics will be bored again. Bid the job with reputable mechanic or save your money for OEM repair which can be a cost saver when it's not done right by somebody else. You can bid that out as well if you have multiple Toy dealerships around. OR, if you have a spare car and garage..
Look. The upside to doing it yourself is that you can go over the whole motor and take care of things like oil seals, seeping water pump, or anything else that should be gone over, checked, or replaced while you are in there.

Make sure you have a good impact wrench or good breaker bar and cheater bar to get the bolt loose on the harmonic balancer. Don't! bust the belt tensioner when you press the pin down.....and do it slooooow. Tighten the 2 bolts evenly as you go. Getting the belt on right with the slack worked out to the tensioner can be a PITA and so are some of the cover bolts and brackets. You can learn new words doing that job..... As for the water pump......what water pump? 255K and no leaks and spins good..... Don't forget to loosen the cam pully bolts BEFORE you take the belt off...... So go have fun
