3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
seriously...its all about money, if you have enough you can put anything in a camry...well plus ALOT of time, creativity and resources. the largest motor so far was a hybrid 1mz/3mz(3.3L). given...anything more then that would be a waste of time, money, and reasources.
keep in mind the size of a motor means little these days.

At this point money really doesn't enter into it, I need to save up and buy a new car before I do anything. But after I get a new car, I plan go turn my current Camry into a mussel car. I'm thinking about, getting a large (horse power) engine, replacing the automatic transmission with a 6 speed manual, new exhaust system, beefed up suspension to handle the extra weight, and various ascetic improvements. It's going to be a project, not a all at once deal.
uuuuum...sorry to burst you bubble man, but ya might want to scale back thoes plans.
no V8 will fit, no 6 speed will fit and its a FWD setup car...which means youd have to do a completle reengeneering of the suspension, drivetrain, fuel system, and electrical system. basically build a totoally new car that looks liks a camry.
honestly youd be better off getting an F-body frame and mounting the camry shell to it.
you also dont need all that crap. turbo the V6, put in the 5 speed and it will be PLENTY fast.

Haha alright, thank you. This is literally something I came up with about 2 hours ago; absolutely no research done.
However, I am still interested in the transmission, would it be possible to put in a paddle shifter system? Something like RX8s have where you can either have it automatically shift or switch over to manual.
you could try to rig somthing up but the problem is that thoes paddle shifters are electricaly linked to the tranny computer...where as our cars have a cable which would be very hard to fab up to make it able to up shift and down shift.

Damn, so I guess I'll never be able to get rid of the auto in this car.
if your serious about it, PM Ecale3. he lives here in MD and has a bunch of the swap parts including a tranny that hes been sitting on for a long time and wouldnt mind ditching.
Don't know if your Camry has the 4-cyl or the V6, but the V6 (3.0L 1MZ-FE) has a lot of potential.
Take a look at the youtube links. It's Tony the Tiger's car. A little older than your '97, but has the 1MZ-FE engine that has been "modified". It still uses the 4-speed auto, which has been "modified".
