I had a bunch of stains on my floor mats and I just used a regular carpet cleaner for that. It did a pretty good job of removing most of them but it took me about 30 min to scrub all of them. What cleaner did you use?

I used a very expensive carpet cleaner that came with my mom's (now dead) carpet cleaning vacuum. It abused my hands a bit but didn't clean the carpet's too well.
The problem with my carpet is that the dirt has been stuck so long, there's layers of it. I can scrub all day long (I did a 3 hour cleaning today), but all that does it spread the dirt around and there's nothing to pick it up. I can't use my vacuum because it's not powerful enough and the water will kill it.
I'd try and use a vacuum if you can get one, or look into the steam cleaning and whatever else that involves like you said. If that doesn't work, I'd probably just buy a new set of floormats. If people tend to spill stuff in your car, maybe try rubber/plastic floormats or something.

The floor mats are in the garbage. The residue got underneath the mats and is on the carpet itself. Getting a vacuum that can handle water pickup is probably going to be a bit more expensive than a professional shampooing.
Take the carpet out on the driveway and use Simple Green or Purple cleaner to soak all the stains. Brush them and use a pressure washer on the entire carpet. Hang the carpet up or put something under it so air can get around it to dry. This sounds drastic but believe me it will work, even on the seats. My daughter's was awful when we got it.
I have also used the Bissell carpet cleaner with the hose attachment. Again spray (soak) the stain with cleaner and then vac out the liquid. Leave all doors open and use a fan to help dry.
The normal household carpet cleaner stuff is just not tough enough to get the junk that you described loosened up.
Guys, this isn't like a floor mat carpet. This is the carpet attached to the car chassis. The idiot that owned the car before me didn't have any type of mat on top of it.

We know. It comes out anyway. If you don't feel comfortable taking it out then look at the 2md paragraph of my post. That method works well also.
Good luck. Sounds like you hate a dirty car as much as I do.
I don't feel comfortable pulling out the carpet. I might go and rent one of those RugDoctor Vacs from Walmart or borrow a Bissel Vac from someone.
For now I just used some Oxi Clean and scrubbed for hours. It didn't clean it all the way, but it freshened it and my car smells nice. I found some nicely fitted rugs at walmart that match the interior color and put them over the dirty carpet.
Thanks guys.

A Rug Doctor is a good Vac for cleaning carpets, for sure.
ASG14 and I rented one a couple of times to clean my carpet, after he removed it from the car, but...if you feel your unable to remove the carpet, you should be able to just remove the front seats, its not that hard....it would make it a lot ezer to get the carpet really clean!

Each front seat is basically held by 4 bolts. There's an electrical connector or two - seat belt/power seats if you have them.
The rear seat cushion basically pulls off.
I bought a Hoover Steam Carpet Shampoo Cleaner a couple of years back. What i found is that it works good in the house, but only so so in the car --> anytime I need to use an attachment, the performance is only so so.
These carpet cleaners work surprisingly well on stains.
The built-in brush works well.
