3rd Generation 94 Pulsing Engine?

Hi all. let me first introduce myself. My name is Jerrick and i own a 94 camry with 175k miles on it. Its running fairly good except now. Ive replaced almost everything on it, and am up to date with oil changes. New spark plugs w/ wires, air intake, fuel filter, oil filter, transmission stuff, new alternator, battery, and a bunch that i cant think of right now.

my problem is just recently the engine would sort of gasp for air (sounds like its coughing or boiling water) when i accelerate from a stop. This is just everyday driving, no abuse or racing what so ever. At idle with the hood open, you could hear the engine so or pulse every now and then with a semi-loud clicking noise coming from the cap & rotor where the spark plugs go. Im not to sure what the problem is, but i know this could get worse if i dont fix it. My dad thought it could be a vucuum leak..so were gona check that later tonight.

ill get a video if needed

Much appreciated for useful replys. Hope to hearing

Have you ever replaced the coil inside the distributor? It could have developed a hairline crack and is shorting itself to any metal ground inside the distributor. This is a fairly common problem on the first 3 generations of Camrys (those generations that used a distributor) as these car get a lot of miles on them. You may want to remove the coil from the distributor and check it for burn marks and cracks. You should also get the specs from any manual and a digital volt/ohmeter and check to see if it in spec.

We just fixed the timing. It was off by a little.. Bit that fixed most of the problem. It still comes back tho in the 2-3 rpm around 40-50 mph tho.

Yes its a 5sfe. Didnt knw that was normal lol.

Ill have to check that coil or whatever. Im sure my dad knws where that is cuz i sure dnt.
