I notice the FAN is late to turn on, is it by designed
The 2 fans seems to never turn on, but the temperature needle is right below mid-range. So the thermostat should be fine.
Will hook up the fans to battery but expect to be fine.
Does anyone notice that ? And do you change the thermo-switch somewhere ? Are thermo-switch for each fan (driverside: AC, passenger-side: motor, am I correct?). Or is it just by designed and it will kick in when really really hot.
Turn on the AC. Both should be running at low speeds.
If you are in cooler climates (Ontario, Canada?), then it may take longer. But if the engine is hot enough (say, ~95 def C coolant temp) then I'd think the radiator fan should come on. If not, you have to check the switch.
Thanks John. It's a 4cyl by the way. Ontario Canada yes.
Will open the hood after driving around for 10-15min.
If the fan not turning, where do I look for the thermo-switch ?

The 1 fan will not usually come on while driving. It usually only comes on when idleing for extended periods of time. While driving there is usually enough air coming through the radiator to keep things cool. When the A/C is turned on both fans come on automatically to help dissipate the extra heat created by the air conditioning system. If the temperature gage stays around the middle of the gage, your car is probably working properly. If you really want to see the one fan turn on by itself, pick a warm day and with the A/C off, let the car idle until the fan comes on. Keep watching the fan with the hood open.
Under normal driving the fan will not turn on (a/c off) if your are moving 25-30mph (kph) as there is enough air forced through the radiator to keep the water temp in spec. If you let it sit and idle it will probably come on when the temp comes up unless it is cool. The little 4 cly doesn not make a tremendous amount of heat at idle and unless it is hot outside it may idle 20 min before the fans come on. The a/c should turn the fans on in all circumstances.
Yea i found this out by fright. First time I cleaned my engine bay, i went driving afterwards, and I popped my hood, only to see that the fans were not spinning....my first reaction...i fucked up. haha. Called toyota and was like OMG OMG I BROKE IT! The guy told me to leave it on and the fan will come on when it gets hot enough....and thats what happend.
Let see. Ontario Canada today should be around 73-55 def F.
Even after driving 10-15 minutes, two ways I know:
1. High idle at 2000 RPM. Depending on coolant temperature then, can take a few minutes to get the fan to come on. I use this method to boil the coolant after a change to boil the air out. Here you need to hear the radiator fan turn.
2. Just let it idle with windows open, turn on the A/C high and use fresh air. The condenser will dump heat from the cabin. Although 73 deg should still be reasonably warm in the sun. Should help warm things up quicker and both fan will go high speed. Here you need to hear them go from low to high speed.
The ECT "switch" (not gauge sender or temperature sensor, they're all different things) should be located on the bottom of the radiator. Passenger side, right the right side of a ATF cooler hose. Should be the same in Canada version of the Camry.

Drove around. Then stopped in the parking lot. AC on. Pop the hood. Fans not on. But after 5 seconds, both are on, for 15-20 seconds at good speed, then both fans power got deactivated for 5-7 seconds (a relay clicking can be heard), then on again for 15-20sec, then off 5-7secs, and so on.
It just my heat-shield is so bad (due to heat+rust) around where the bolts are. Scare to unscrew those bolts since they're so rusted and the heat-shield holes (where the bolts are located) are also rusted.
it happened to me. My mechanic changed the radiator and said he wanted to see the fan come on before I drove it off. If you want it to come on, it ain't going to happen. After about 12 minutes of idle, the fan came on, everything was tight and temp gauge does not move up. Radiator was half clogged so the upper half was the only part working.
