3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
So i was changing out the "D" light and was successful. Then the back light went out for the gear indicator. Fixed that successfully.
So then i go to start it up. make sure i didn't mess anything up. let it run for 5 minutes make sure nothing pops up. the car started right up, no lights back the tail of the car out of the garage cause of the 1mz's rich burning creates such lovely fumes. come back to it after the 5 minutes and the airbag light is on. took it to the dealer and they "lost" the code reader. which that dude is a dumbass seeing as the connects i dont think have changed since 96. <-- correct me if i'm wrong. took it back home, checked all the wires this morning there is nothing wrong, fuse is good, and the connection to the dash (connectors) are clean.
So i was going to borrow my neighbors code reader to find out what has gone bad, remember im assuming the connection to the computer is the same, but i cant find anywhere the camry body codes. if anyone has any idea what the codes are or if they know what is wrong, any help would be nice to get rid of this orange dash light.

You can NOT check the SRS codes like a normal CEL light. You have to use the DLC connnectors and jump the wires.
1st, unhook the battery, wait a few mint, then pull the SRS fuse behind the coin try. See if it resets the light. IF it comes back on, then you need to read the code. I'll give it 75% chance it;s the center SRS computer. Ironically, when I replaced the "D" bulb on my dad's '96. the SRS light went on too.......
DIAGNOSIS INSPECTION
SRS warning light check
(a) Turn the ignition switch to ACC or ON and check that the
SRS warning light lights up.
(b) Check that the SRS warning light goes out after approx. 6
seconds.
HINT:
• When the ignition switch is at ACC or ON and the SRS
warning light remains on, the center airbag sensor as–
seemly has detected a malfunction code.
• If, after approx. 6 seconds have elapsed, the SRS warn–
ing light sometimes lights up or the SRS warning light
lights up even when the ignition switch is OFF, a short
in the SRS warning light circuit can be considered like–
ly. Proceed to SRS warning light system (always lit up,
when ignition switch LOCK position) on page RS–146.
Diagnostic trouble code check
Using diagnosis check wire:
1. OUTPUT DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE
(a) Turn the ignition switch to ACC or ON position and wait
Approx. 20 seconds.
(b) Using SST, connect terminals Te and El of the DLC1 or
DLC2.
SST 09843 – 18020
NOTICE: Never make a mistake with the terminal connec–
tion position as this will cause a malfunction.
2. READ DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE
Read the 2–digit diagnostic trouble code as indicated by the
number of times the SRS warning light blinks. As an
example, the blinking patterns, normal, 11 and 31 are as
shown on the illustration.
• Normal code indication
The light will blink 2 times per second.
• Malfunction code indication
In the event of a malfunction, the light will blink. The
number represented by the first blink code output
indicates the first digit of a 2–digit diagnostic trouble
code. After a 1.5 second pause, the second blink code
will indicate the second digit.
If there are 2 or more codes, there will be a 2.5 second
pause between each. After all the codes have been
output, there will be a 4.0 second pause and they will all
be repeated.
HINT:
• In the event of a number of trouble codes, indication will
1st from the smallest numbered code to the larger.
• If it does not output a diagnostic trouble code or outputs
a diagnostic trouble code without terminal connection,
proceed to the Tc terminal circuit inspection on page RS–
127.

Hey Adam, are these procedures only for the 96 Cam? I've got a 92 Cam that needs resetting but I remember reading that it can only be done through the DLC. The 96 is a OBD II and 92 a OBD I?????

Alrighty. might need to catch up with a tomorrow adam on this. my neighbor one is old fashion, and is more into the carb engines.... takes his fuel injected else where... and my gf forgot her dads code reader so i guess im going to prolly need to find a code reader somewhere. i think i tried ur reset method. i pulled the battery, waited about 3-5 minutes, then i pulled the fuse marked Whipe, which according to my book has the whipers and the airbag system in it.
All the light does is come on during AUX key positioning, and will come on in the on position, will blink once about 5-10 seconds after the engine has started then will remain on. however i will give the fuse pulling method one more try. (in da morning) Fingers crossed though.
Thanks again

Ok. after going over this with adam we determined that toyota is somewhat retarded. when connecteding the pins on ur DLC use a paperclip. does work.
But anyway toyota says connect TE1 and E1 on the 96. wrong.... connect TC and E1. The cruise light WILL flash. This is normal. but u will now notice that the airbag light/srs light flashing. now follow the steps to read the code give above.

^ Thats was from a '94 camry which wa BOTH OBD 1 and 2 depending on engine. Should be the same for your car.
Just unhooking your battery SHOULD be enough to reset it. BUT, if the light is on, there usually is a true issue.
My air bag light was never on till I took my cluster out to change bulbs. The light has been on since and I tried unhooking the negative terminal on the battery and it disappeared for like a couple secs and came back on.
