3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I have a 96 Camry LE and the remote it comes with has two buttons. The top one is for unlock and lock but the other button seems to have no use. It indicates with the led light that I have pressed it but nothing happens. Is it possible to program this key to do something or is it virtually useless?
Unlock and lock are separate buttons and then there's a red one for panic. The bottom one might be fore trunk release but you have to hold that one down for a few seconds.
If it's not Toyota original equipment, then it's completely possible that the button does absolutely nothing.

no its factory and there are only two buttons. its a black casing with rubber black buttons the top one has a few prickles on it but the other button is useless.. wondering if it can be programmed to something
yea i have the same remote for my factory alarm. I believe the second button is the panic alarm...you have to hold it for a couple seconds to prevent accidental activation

Well I tried it and when I press the unlock/lock button it works fine. My panic button is the same button if you hold it. Still, the second button does nothing, pressed or held.
The second one can be programmed for a second car if you have another Toyota with the same VIP security system installed. I have the same remote for my 99 Camry.

so basically it really does nothing if you only have one camry? that seems illogical but i guess it could happen with people from toyota nowadays! any updates werkit217?
uh, from what i remember, it's to program the remote to a car, and to change alarm functionality i.e. chirp or no chirp, auto lock or unlock, etc.
don't have the manual on hand, sorry.

reason: for a trunk popper, you need an electric trunk opener from inside the car. our camry's have a simple cable/lever type.
i.e: when you pull on the trunk release, you're basically pulling on a cable that runs along the car, release the lock. to use the trunk popper feature, you would need to have a button to pop the trunk. it would function by sending an electrical signal to pop the trunk.
so in short, can't do it.

But what if I get an actuator or solenoid used for unlocking doors and connected the cable to it, can't i in theory connect the actuator to a remote button? I'm sure someone has been able to do this before because the idea doesn't sound too illogical.
