I have a 97 camry with a 4 cylinder and the other day while driving i noticed a noise coming from the engine. The top end was redone a couple of months ago. the sound is a tapping sound and is only there when you accelerate or rev the engine. it is not a knock. could it be possible that the cams are bad or not tightened down enough?

sure that's possible. It could also be a sticky lifter. Is it a new top end or did they reuse your old heads? What did they do? You may want to bring it back to them assuming you have some sort of warranty. It may end up being something entirely different such as your water pump or something.
