Sticking AC to defroster control

I have a 1997 Camry. Yesterday evening I set my AC control on the defrost setting (the one to the far right) This morning I started the car and moved it over to the top AC vent setting (the one to the far left) HOwever the Air ducts did not adjust. I played with it for about 5 minutes before it eventually switched over and the air started coming through the top AC vent.

Any ideas on what could have caused this delay and is this something I can grease??

thanks

Might pull your glove box as this should give you a decent view of the top of the plenum where the controller actuates the door(s). I haven't had this problem and am not sure if they use cables, pneumatic or electric controls. (I suspect cable and if so you may be able to use a lubricant.)
