Idle Air Control/Intake Air Tempature Sensor

Okay, I have the same problem as a number of posts, but can't seem to find the answer I am looking for. My car has a very rough start that last for about 1 to 2 minutes and then levels off to a normal idle. Based on what I've read here, it is the IAC.

When I look in my Haynes book I am able to find the AIT sensor but nothing regarding the IAC Idle Air Control. When I look up the IAC on Google, it certainly is not the same as an AIT.

So, where is the IAC located and is it refered to something different in the Haynes book?

Just a note - I read on one site that the 4" rubber hose/tube between the air filter and the throttle body will develop cracks and cause rough idle for the first couple of mnutes when cold starting.

Can someone give me some advice on the IAC and AIT?

The IAC is on the bottom of your throttle body. Looks where your rubber intake pipe connects to the TB. Get some Seafoam Deep Creep and an old toothbrush. Remove the 4" rubber intake pipe and clean the butterfly and spray some cleaner into the IAC hole. The IAT sensor is pretty reliable. Clean your TB and check the rubber hose for cracks before worrying about the IAT. The Haynes manual may refer to it as the idle control valve.

That's sounds easy enough.

I noticed that one of the hoses (about a 1") that connects to the 4" hose didn't appear to be seated properly. I took off the clamp and made sure the hose was seated properly. When I started it up this morning - no problem.

However, when I went out at lunch - rough cold start. We have an auto mechanic that works out of one of our buildings and he said it might be water seeping into a cylinder, possible damage caused from when my radiator went and the car overheated. Sounds expensive, so I praying that isn't it.

That's possible also. A way to check that would be to pull the plugs prior to cold starting and have a look at them. You should also be getting some white smoke though as well. Or get a block test done.

In my mind that seems like it would be an expensive fix if I have that as my problem, especially having no clue what to do - but I guess I will cross that bridge if and when I come to it.

I came home from work, took off the 4" hose and sprayed and brushed real well in the throttle area. Fingers crossed.

I'll pull the plugs this weekend (ugh, the rear bank)

Here is another twist to this thing.

If the car is parked on a level surface, the problem does not occur. It can sit for 10 hours or as little as three hours and it starts fine.

However, when I park on an incline of say 15 degrees or less for more than a few of hours, the cold start problem occurs. This is with the front end at the lower point (I have not tried it with the front end higher).

I cannot find anything on this sort of thing and it has me puzzled.
