Unhappy 94 Camry Engine dies in drive

I have a 1994 Toyota Camry with 160k 2.2 4 cyl
The car starts and idles perfectly, you can rev the engine as high as you want in park or neutral and it is smooth and responsive. When I put it in drive or reverse and move the accelorator pedal it stumbles and dies. If I put it in gear and let it idle without pressing the pedal it will drive anywhere you want to go at 3-5 miles per hour without a miss or engine stumble. But as soon as I appy pressure to the pedal it stumbles, coughs and dies.
Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks,
Scott

It may be your torque converter lockup clutch is stuck on due to a bad lockup solenoid or something.

Are you positive all cylinders are firing? Maybe one of your injectors is bad?

Have you checked your alternator output and battery health?
