weird problem with alarm system

i have a 1999 toyota camry with the factory alarm system. today when i went to lock and unlock the doors, the alarm didn't chirp. it usually chirps once when locking and twice when unlocking. the red light that usually blinks when the car is armed now blinks even when the car is unlocked. does anybody know how to fix this problem?

Does your system have a button you can push?
My 2000 camry alarm has the red light doubled as a on/off push button switch. When the alarm goes off while armed, it blinks constantly to tell me that the alarm went off. To turn it off, or reset the system, I have to put the key in and turn to the 'ON' position and push the button 8 times and then car honks and flashes.

Is the factory system really that elaborate that you have to manually reset it each time the alarm goes off? I've got an aftermarket DEI/Viper system and the LED blinks to indicate which zone was triggered and then resets when you turn the ignition to "ON" - the last few alarm triggers are stored in flash memory and can be read with DEI's bitwriter or whatever they use.
