Cigarette Lighter (CLT) & Auxilliary 12v Outlet Issues

Hi all,

My '97s cigarette lighter has stopped working. It's never been used for smokes, just accessories, and barely at that. I got the car 3 years ago from the original non-smoking owner and have used the adapter for a GPS only once in a while.

For months, the adapter was 'loose' in that when I removed the GPS power plug, the sleeve part of the adapter would come out (about 1/2"). I would just push it back in and it was fine. Then the other day when unplugging, the whole damn adapter came out - compete with the connectors that plug into the harness. I took apart enough of the dash to get the adapter into place again and the power source attached but it doesn't work. Also, the aux 12v port beneath the CLT does not work either. Not sure if that is related.

Thinking it might be the fuse, but I can't find a diagram in the $#$%@#$ owners manual that identifies which fuse is for the CLT. Radio and everything else works fine.

So my questions:

1) Does the CLT coming "apart" like I describe mean it's broken?

2) If the answer to ^^^ is no, what fuse is for the CLT?

3) If all else fails, how would you suggest I wire an auxilliary 12v drop in the car? It needs to be able to power a GPS. It's my daughter's car. I'm pretty comfortable with light auto wiring etc. (I've installed A-pillar gauges and hardwired radar detectors before).

Thanks, kj

*UPDATE*

Stoopid me, found the fuse diagrams. All are ok. Just can't figure out why both the CLT and the 12v Aux port would stop working. Thanks for any guidance.

I Think/HOPE You Can Help Me!

I plugged in a back massager into the cigarette lighter. It buzzed with an electrical sound, knocked out the clock, made the nav wacky, the radio "tinny", drains the battery, the auto-slow down going down hills disappear (forgot what it is called), drains the battery, etc.

Being ALL of these problems were caused immediately and are all over the place, I am wondering about a wiring harness behind the lighter.

Toyota refuses to trace the wiring (don't ask). It was a beautiful, perfect Tundra w/24k miles.

I REALLY need help. Is it possible the connectors melted...harness melted...? All fuses, everywhere OK.

Please anyone help if you can. It's a total loss because of growing issues and safety concerns if I can't trace & fix this.

Double check the fuses. Since the clock is also out, it seems likely to be a fuse. Use a 12 volt test light or a digital volt/ohmeter to check all the fuses.

Wrong path

OK, don't mean to be rude...and I'm not, but I already said the fuses were checked. The Master fuse, every fuse involved...by 3 dealers & 2 independents.

I am not in the mood to start over, I need to start by tracing from the cigarette lighter, where it all started. I think one of the wiring harnesses melted, as the problems keep piling up.

So, is there anyone there who has the skill to help me?

If it were a "fuse", I wouldn't have been working on this for a year, purchased another car which REALLY set me back, so please, no more "coincidence, fuse, alternator went bad", etc. scenarios.

I was THERE when the thing shorted out, HEARD it, and the results were immediate...and the back massager died immediately. The symptoms get worse as I drive it.

So, any help out there? The truck cost me $30,000++ Thanks in advance.
