programming remotes and is there a max number of remotes?

Hello! I have a 98 ES300 with automatic locks and I am trying to program 2 factory remotes for the car. I found instructions and one of them worked just fine, but the other one won't program.

Before I try to return it to the ebay seller, I was wondering if maybe there is a maximum number of remotes that can be programmed for the car. I don't have the old remotes anymore so I wouldn't mind clearing all the remotes and reprogramming just these 2 if that is possible.

I don't know if the sequence for programming for a toyota and a lexus are teh same, but if somebody knows whether or not there is a max number of remotes that you can program for the camry, that could be helpful.

Thanks in advance for your replies!
Scott

agreed. 4 is the max for all the factory toyota ones i've programmed. however, clearing old ones isn't usually needed. say you program remotes A B C and D. When you program remote E, it will erase A and leave BCD in memory. Program F and it will erase B, and so on. wouldn't hurt to clear all of them tho, for safety reasons.

4 is the most. as gibson said, its better and recommended to clear all remotes and program them in one at a time again. i was unaware of the abcd scenario, i thought that you had to clear it all at once and then reprogram each one.

Thanks everyone for the replies. It sounds like that might be my issue. I will see if I can figure out how to clear the remotes and let you know if that's what it turned out to be.
