Canada 5spd engine revs on shift

Hi There,

1998 Camry, 2.2, 5spd.

Under load, if you depress the clutch pedal to change gears, most times, the engine keeps the revs up (2-4 seconds) before coming down.

It's wierd, almost like a sticking throttle cable or something, but it's not.

I tried replicating it on a standstill to confirm if the throttle cable was sticking, but with no avail. The only time it does it is after a load has been applied to the motor, and you're releasing the load by depressing the clutch.

Not really a big deal for acceleration - but if you're slowing down, you're almost fighting this as you go backwards through the gearbox...

Anyone else hear of this? Any suggestions?

yuk yuk yuk.

Seriously though, it's not intertia. If it was, I'd be able to replicate it at a standstill.

If I bring the revs up while parked, hold it at say 2000rpm as if I was cruising (except with the clutch fully disengaged), and let off the gas, the revs drop instantly.

If I'm cruising at 2000rpm, let off the gas and fully disengage the clutch, the rpms don't fall at all for almost 4 seconds.

Thanks in advance

is the engine rev matching for you?

but in all seriousness....I would check for carbon in the throttlebody, or a sticky throttle body in general. also check the iac and as you mentioned, the throttle cable as well

and if you have cruise control, check that also. my gf had that problem on her malibu before and the problem was actually inside the cruise control unit
