3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I recently bought a 93 Camry with the 2.2 engine. I bought it for $800 with 125k miles. I bought it knowing it had an oil leak, so I thought "no big deal". Boy was I wrong!!!!!!
I have replaced the timing belt, the waterpump, the crank seal, the camshaft seal, the oil pump shaft and rotor (mine had grooves worn in it), the oil pump shaft seal, the oil pump o-ring seal, the valve cover gasket...........after all of this, the damn leak is still present!!!!!!!!! I am pissed off at this car and ready to burn it, someone save me from doing it. I have over $300 now in just parts and my own labor. What the hell else is there on this thing that can be leaking????? I know it's not anything by the timing cover area yet that is where the leak is dripping from. right at the point of the oil pan cover, drip......drip......drip.....drip.......constantly dripping after the car warms up. It doesn't do it when it's cold, only after it warms up. I pulled the timing cover back off and all is dry behind it, no oil appears to be coming from this area.
The back of the engine up high appears to be satured everywhere with oil...
What else can I replace?????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Don't miss dabs of RTV at semi-circular plugs if that engine has them. You may also need distributor shaft seal and/or oil pan seal.

I'm going to buy some engine oil dye this evening and try to pinpoint where it is leaking from. I'll post up what I find later.............thanks for the replies!
I would change the dist o-ring and valve cover gasket. Both (as well as most items you mentioned) leaked on mine.
I did change the valve cover gasket but not the dist. o-ring.....I might try that this evening as well. This thing is putting out more oil than a Texas oil field!!!!!!!
Recheck the valve cover gasket. I had to put some rtv on mine to finally stop it from leaking after changing it twice. Then the distributor O ring like they said. The rear main seal leaked pretty good on mine too.
Mine was the Valve Cover gasket also. I order the OEM sealant for the four spots that are shown in the FSM. The big socket was cheap @ autozone so I just purchased it. I retorqued the four nuts after I ran the engine and it cooled back down. No leaks now.

Oh I feel your pain.......my car is leaking in the same spot and it makes me want to kill myself..........I cant even do a good oil change because it just effing leaks out..........Pain in the ass........I am just about to replace the oil pan/and every fucking seal that is in this thing......if it still leaks the bye bye cam......right into a wall.......

Watch out for the build thread!!!
IM BAAAAAACK!!!!!!!
Not that it helps much, but I had a 91 that always leaked and burned oil to the point where it was run practically dry on 8 month old remanants of an oil change... and the car ran great.
