Crank Sprocket is stuck!

I am in the middle of a front seal job and timing set, and I can't get the crank sprocket off! This is a 98 4cyl. I've tried prying. I've tried channel locks. I've tried penetrating oil. I even tried a little bit of propane. No dice.

Unfortunately, mine doesn't have the two holes in it for a puller.

Any ideas?

My last ditch ideas are to try more propane and something cold like that "air in a can" stuff, and if that doesn't work, I will drill and tap two holes and pull it off.

Now that I've done a good job of boogering it up with the channel locks, do I need to replace it? Will I be able to find one of these anywhere? (with the threaded holes would be nice!)

Thanks.

Wow thats weird. I just did the timing on ours this weekend after the water pump seized and the crank bolt came off no prob with an impact gun. I went to go get a harmonic balancer puller kit but the pulley just slid off after i spent 2 trips to go get one.....

If there really arent any threads, you gotta do what you gotta do to get it off. I think a new one is around 130 at autozone.

plan B - do you have a gear puller? (but this can damage, crack, break the pulley)

i would just pick up a single tap and make your own for a puller

what area on the crank pulley did you "booger" up? if its where the belt contacts, you can probably clean that up with a file if the damage isnt too bad as to wear on the belt over time.

I am talking about the sprocket that turns the timing belt, under the timing cover, not the damper/pulley.

well, can you figure out why it is stuck? Is there rust due to a leaking water pump or something? Is the crank shaft nicked from your efforts? Is it bent somehow? That should slide off very easily since it is only keyed to the shaft and nothing more. These of course don't have any holes for pulling since it is normally not necessary.

Can you get a bearing separator underneath it? ie.: http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...temnumber=3979

Shagg - It's been awhile since I did my timing belt, but on the 1996 4 cylinder 5SFE, there is a cupped washer (ie. belt guide) that keeps the timing belt on the pulley.

If you can pull this cupped washer off, it should expose two holes on the crank timing pulley.

I can't say with certainty, but I think that the holes are threaded. It looks like they are in the photo below.

I hope this helps...good luck mate!

Mine looks exactly like that, without the holes. LAME!

Any idea where I could get one of them WITH holes, once I finish destroying mine getting it off?

Crank should be fine. There might be a little rust, I think there was a water leak before I got the car, but the amount of rust is small (but it doesn't take much!)

No friggen way to get something behind the sprocket.

Using M42 alloy HSS drill bit with split point, drill two holes 6.75 mm diameter 20 mm deep
then use metric tap M8X1.25 [buttom type to tap both holes]
Then use 12.8 class metric screws for your puller.
you may also use 5/16 tap and bolts grade 8 or stronger.

Shagg,

Here's a shot in the dark idea before you try any further brute force methods. Mabye the "key" in the shaft is jammed past the "keyway" in the sprocket pulley. Try turning the sprocket pulley counterclockwise relative to the shaft and see if they line up better. Obviously the shaft is going to try to turn so put a screwdriver on one of the sprockets (tangentially to the pulley) and tap the pulley counterclockwise.
