What's this mystery part?

Car is a 92 Camry LE Wagon V6 w/ABS

(pics below are big - use scroll bars)

This looks like a temperature sensor but I was told the coolant temperature sensor is threaded near the thermostat. As you can see, it's broken, so I would like to replace it but that might be easier if I knew what to call it. Also, what does it do?

It's threaded into a pipe that leads from the block to the heater hose(?). Other sensors/vacuum switches seem to use the same pipe. It has a 2-wire connector clipped onto the top; the wires descend into a large wire bundle and I can't really see what they attach to.

The engine runs reasonably well, though it does idle very fast (1700 rpm) when first started and I do have a check engine light with Code 71 (EGR).

Thanks for your help identifying this part; the car is new to me and I'm still waiting for the manual to arrive in the mail.

Best Regards -- thornfish

flux capacitor. Looks like it needs replaced. You might be low on headlight fluid as well.

Yeah man, looks like you're only putting out 0.89 gigawatts MAX. If wanna go any where soon, you gotta make sure you're putting out at least 1.21 gigawatts.

Thank you for your good natured replies. I pulled the thing and took it to my friendly neighborhood NAPA guy who basically said it must be a flux capacitor. (It's ok cuz I was able to pick up some head light fluid).

Got home and noticed some marks on the part. A part number! 89462-20020.

That's a Cold Start Injector Time Switch to you and me. $270 at my Toyota dealer. Car runs good so I'll leave it broken. No time travel, though.

I'll try a junk yard.

thanks again -- thornfish
