Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I have a 99 Camry LE with 70k miles. Every time I go 30+ miles per an hour, I hear a loud, annoying humming noise and it's been going on for a while now.
The noise is mostly loud around 40-45 mph, and it gets less around 50 mph.
It does not sound like my wheel bearings because I don't hear any noise when I make a turn.
Anyone know what this could be?
Edit: It was my rear passenger side wheel bearing.

Do you get steering vibration when you hear the humming noise? Is the humming noise from the center of the car, i.e. gearbox or more front i.e wheels? This could be a number of things really...

Hey, there is no vibration at all from the steering at all. I mostly hear the noise from the front and center of the car.
Infamous Aisin whine? Differential or transmission?
Does it make noise with O/D off? Does it make noise in 2nd? (I have to search for the speed limit in 2nd. Anyone know offhand?)

Today, I was changing lanes and the noise was still the same, could that mean it was the wheel bearings?
It does sound like you might have a bearing groan. If the sound sorta starts up at 30 then goes away at 40 or 50, sounds sorta like a shot bearing. You can jack the car up and seem if there's an movement in the wheel front to back etc.
Sometimes ive taken the caliper and rotor off and spun the bearing by hand slowly to see if it spins completely smooth and easily. If theirs any rougher spot - the bearing might be bad. If the car runs good and smoothly - the tranny of differential probally arent it.

Yeah, the car is running very smoothly, which is why I'm confused as to why it's making such a loud humming noise. Transmission seems fine.
I'll try to jack the car up as soon as I can so test the bearings.

OMG!! So okay- I have a 99 camry CE, stands for crappy edition... try this- when you are driving and hear this noise- pull over, shift into neutral and press the gas. do you still hear it? mine does. no it's not the bearings, not the brakes, not the tires, and it actually doesn't matter how fast, how slow and how warmed up the car is or not. it doesn't matter what the rpm are or aren't. i'm taking my car in to the dealer this week, because i have had this problem for about a year now. my toyota mechanic friend is interested in looking for some sort of air or vaccum leak? type thingie. every mechanic told me all those same things, cept when they heard it in neutral, they were all puzzled and wanted a lot of money to "research" it. I can't wait to get it fixed, because as you know, it's annoying and nobody knows what it really is!!! i will definately post the findings from the dealer when i get them. hey is your check engine light on too? how's your power windows? 3 outta 4 don't work in my car. getting that fixed too!

Could possibly be a belt, tensioner bearing or waterpump. If the car has a vacuum leak it would run reallllyyy bad.
Or it could be something not even engine related like a blower motor etc.

Wow, that sucks. For your check engine light, go to Auto Zone and have them get the code with the OBD scanner. They will scan it for free. Then research the code on the net to see what is wrong.
I did have a check engine light and it turned out to be one of my oxygen sensors which I got replaced by a local mechanic (way cheaper than dealers). My Toyota dealer quoted me $230 just to replace the oxygen sensor while a local mechanic only charged $50. So dealerships really are rip-offs. It's been a week and my check engine light hasn't been on.
Also, all my window motors work so I don't have any problems with that.
I'm getting my tires rotated/ balanced soon so I'll see if that helps.
The thing is that the noise only starts after 30+ MPH. So this should help rule out wheel bearings, which should groan/grind with speed and change pitch in turns.
That's why I suspect transmission and/or differential. And check manual for speed limit in low gears -- if you can go to about 35-40 MPH in 2nd without noise and shift into D. If noise comes back that should help verify it.
