You will not see any gains by just installing an after marker muffler (any after market muffler) on a 5sfe. If you don't want to hear the exhaust, keep the stock muffler. Anything other than stock will make alot more noise in comparison. Even if you get a cat-back exhaust, you'll only gain maybe 3hp max. Nothing you could ever feel. Been there, done that. It's the cats that play the biggest role in exhaust flow.

Unfourtunatly, CA smog laws prevent any mods to the smog equipment. The manifold or primary cat is something you can't get around. I haven't found any CA legal high-flow manifold cats anywhere. You can install a high-flow downstream cat, but you'd also have to get a cat-back exhaust to go with it.

High-flow cat+cat back exhaust+aftermarket muffler= louder than stock and less than 5hp gain.

Exhaust is my next project on my 1MZ-FE Avalon, I was thinking aftermarket headers straight to a N1 style muffler. Other than a shitload of noise, your saying I would gain a negligible about of power?

^ on the 1mz, headers and muffler wont really free up much power if any. but changing the Ypipe and cat will.

OP...magnaflow are good for what ya want. most are a straight through design but very quiet. as they have said. dont expect to actualy feel any power gains.

The multi-chambered Magnaflow XL's are pretty damn quiet. It has a deep tone which you can barely hear from outside the car..

I don't care about power, just something that might give me better gas mileage. It's a family car, and with a 5sfe, i'm not expecting power gains at ll.

im not sure its gonna improve your gas millage, at least not enough to justify the cost. go with a chambered like flow master and your not gaining any power. go with flow through, like magnaflow and youll loose some tq down low. spend the money on tuneup and good gas.
