3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Hey guys, I've been bouncing around a few ideas in my head lately, and since I currently lack funds for a turbo (smiles sheepishly), I've been looking into other ideas to eke out a few more ponies and performance from my car.
5-speed V6 LE, 3VZ. 250k, but never been raced/harshly driven (until I got it).
a)Nitromethanol injection
I stumbled onto this while surfing, wondering if it's advisable, and whether it would provide a noticable increase in power.
b)Car is due for a new exhaust. Custom y-pipe seems like a good idea (big surprise), based on what I've read, but what about a dual exhaust system? more specifically, if I mount a second muffler and connect it to the piping behind the cat, will it really give me an extra hp or two? I'm wondering if the cat/merged downpipes will act as a choke-point of sorts.
c)Quaife LSD. I remember reading that it was designed for the E153 tranny, however, I think I have the E53. Would it be compatible? I live through about 6 months of snow annually, so this would be pretty handy, and a lot cheaper than a whole AWD conversion.
Any thoughts on this?

a) the nitrometh would be the biggest improvement in power of the 3.
b) on an NA motor, a dual exhaust wont help at all. in fact nothing over 2.5" would make any differance. the most important things are the cat, Ypipe and to reduce the bends, which are just the ones at the muffler. duals are just a visual thing in most cases anyways.
sweet, thanks Bird
Although, for the LSD, my concern was more about compatibility with the transmission
Incidentally, I looked under the car today, and I think I'm also going replace the pre-muffler (?) with a cherry-bomb; It can't be good for airflow to have 2 mufflers.
btw, is there an aftermarket kit for the y-pipe, or would I have to do a custom fabrication?

there is the OBX(jpp) headers/ypipe but no one i know of has tried it on the 3vz. the pre muffler is a resonator, and really doesnt restrict the exhaust much so i wouldnt bother talkin it out unless your ok with some rasp or go with a full catback redo.
as far as the LSD, i think there was the kazaa(i think thats the name) LSD that fits the e153. not sure if you have the e53 tranny though. i thought i remember the quaife LSD fitting but that was a while ago thoes posts were hangin around.

he's got the E53. as a note to the OP: do get some kind of custom y-pipe made seeing as how it is the worse part of the 3vz behind the HG. second advance timing and lean out afm cog 2 clicks <that alone makes the 3vz pump out 200hp from the stock 185. the y-pipe will add 15-20hp maybe more. there's also some neat trick you can do with your intake to make your engine a bit more responive (i gotta find that link for you). i suggest going to clublexus and shuffle through the old threads there for some useful info.

2 questions though
1st, the AFM cog: As noobish as this sounds, how do I access it?
and 2nd, would those horsepower ratings/gains be at the crank or at the wheel?

Going with a smaller diameter exhaust with a high flow cat and muffler would most likely give you a few more ponies on a na car than a larger or dual exhaust would. The exhaust gasses would have a higher velocity through the pipe with the same or less back pressure, it would help to better pull the exhaust gasses from the cylinder allowing more fresh air in on the next stroke, it would however sound pretty bad on a Camry.
Okay, reviving my old thread
need a new exhaust system, since my flex pipes are gone, and the rest of the stuff is going the same way, not too keen on getting fined by the cops lol
so, anyone know where I order a decent, sporty (if possible) exhaust? more importantly, I'd need someone who'll ship to eastern canada (since I don't exactly want to drive to NYC for an exhaust)
