Axle shifting in transmission. Possibly need new tranny?
So I was cruising with a few friends yesterday after a hard day at work. On my way home my car started to shake badly, like a wheel was about to fall off. I pulled over, checked all my lug nuts, which were all good. So I drove it home, still shaking badly, parked it for the night, and went to bed. This morning I took it to tire discounters because I noticed a wheel weight was missing, and was going to have them rebalance it. They checked it, I drove it off, and still it shook. So we put it on the rack there, and played with it. As we turned the wheels, we noticed the axle on the drivers side was shifting in the differential. Not good! So the car is parked, and according to a few sources, I more than likely need a new transmission. What do you all think?
Sounds like the ouput shaft bearings have seen better days.

so is there a possibility that this could be fixed, or am I going to have to replace the tranny?
Replace or rebuild would be your options.

Well damn.
So here is the situation. I borrowed an extra 3k in student loans to fix my engine. It needs to be honed, reringed and revalved. But now that this has happened and it's gonna cost me 2k. If it was you all, would you just trade it in and use the extra 3k to buy another car? Or would you just fix the transaxle and just not fix the engine?
Dude, I can save you like $1000 if you bought my tranny and my axles AND had a shop install them. That would give you a lot of money for your engine. Also, I suggest getting a 5SFE motor from mr2oc for cheap and swapping it in. You're probably going to pay $500 out the door for a motor there and maybe $500-800 for a direct drop in. If you did the honing, reringing, etc., that's going to run you close to the same alone. Plus you'll have to get new pistons, rings, valves and components. Pistons are going to run no cheaper than $450, valves will cost about that much too...
Your call....
what do you mean when you say the axel was shifting? up and down by 1/2 an inch? in and out by a 1/4 inch? turning back and forth there was a dead spot of about 1/3 of a turn? if youre talking about a repair of this magnitude, i would be sure you found the correct cause.
$3K in the engine and another $2-3K in the transmission are a big chunk toward a "new" used car. And besides, what kind of warranty are you going to get? 6 months? 1 year? With all kinds of "exclusions?"
No doubt you're going to have to spend more after that. So maybe buy a new, fuel-efficient compact with 3-year bumper-to-bumper warranty and not throw the good $5-7K after your clunker.

well its been decided that a new car is needed. i need something that will get me through 4 years of college then law school. Im looking at a tiburon or an eclipse. any imput? im leaning towards the eclipse. about the same car, but the tiby has an extra gear (6spd), looks nicer, better safety and reliability ratings, and costs less.
Not sure I'd want to go with a Mitsubishi. They usually don't do very well as a whole on JD Power studies. However, a couple of their models do rank well.
How about something like a Civic or the plain-Jane Corolla? Many don't care about new Corolla's electric steering however. You can search for reviews and pricing info on edmunds, motortrend, caranddriver, etc.
