1998 Camry Brake Lock Issue

Hello All,

I'm stuck on a brake lock issue on a 1998 camry.

Drive it about 10 miles and the front passenger side brake locks and you can tell its just putting a load on the motor.

What I've done >>>

The 1st time it happened it rotor was glowing red hot. So I replaced the rotor, pads and caliper.

Drove it about 20 miles and locks again. So talked to everyone and they think the original heat up might have caused the bearing to go. So replaced the bearings, ball joint, and tie rod. The items because the boots were damaged and leaking oil. Did a flush on the brake fluid on fronts brakes.

Drove it again, went about 15 miles this time and locked again.

So Now I'm not sure what it its. Only the 1 brake is locked.

Haven't found anything on the searches so any help is welcomed.

Thanks
Randy

The caliper may be sticking. It could be the piston inside the caliper has seized inside the bore due to rust, or the caliper slide pins have rusted and seized inside the caliper mounting bracket. To check the slide pins remove the caliper and hang it out of the way. See if you can move the slide pins in and out of the mounting bracket. A rubber brake hose on that wheel could have also collasped internally and is not allowing the brake fluid to flow back towards the master cylinder. This would result in constant brake pressure on that brake. The first 2 are more common brake problems, so check them first.

Well he changed the caliper, so the pins are probably fine.

But I agree with the rubber brake hose issue. Thats probably it, when I changed the caliper on my dads truck I also changed the hose ( about 20$ or so) at the same time. Make sure the new hose comes with the copper gasket, as those arent reusable from when you redid the caliper.

If you change the hose and still have the issue it might be the master cylinder or the caliper you got was a dud.

The slide pins are in the caliper mounting bracket. He could have just bolted on the new caliper without checking/lubricating the slide pins. I would still check the pins.

+1.

Unless the rebuilt comes with a bracket and pins, those items are probably left there. And if they were sticking before, well they are sticking now.

So I'd change out the bracket and anchor pins and rubber boots. Properly lube them with Permatex ceramic brake lube.

You might want to change out the rubber hose as well. It's the time you save.

Something else - if the car has ABS, the ABS modulator could be malfunctioning, preventing fluid from returning to the MC from the caliper. very unlikely, but possible.

update on everything

Well the final fix is in.

the brake hose was fine, broke the line at the caliber and up at the abs modulator and both released the pressue, but to be sure blew out line with the air hose and ran a wire thru and no hold ups.

cleared out the slide pins and relubbed them, they had some sludge from heating up, so it didn't hurt the process.

next I replaced the abs modulator, well this might be a partial problem, cuz at this point I'd get about 50 miles and it would heat up and start shimming bad.

so put the car up on stands and just ran it, every thing looked fine, but after awhile it got hot again. So at this point just hosed it all off, to cool it down and shot it with the temp guage cuz didn't know if I had cooked the bearing again. Well then I finally seen that the damm caliper was just barely sticking, cut the top of the rotor started heating up and it was just sticking at the end. Just looking at it, it looked like the it was fully released cuz it was spinning . But I couldn't admit I got a bum new part.

so finally admitted they gave me a bum new caliper. It was just barely sticking and rubbing, but after awhile it got hot.

Put on the new caliper again and it resolved my problems.

Thanks for the help... Lesson was don't rule out your new part being bad !!
