1998 Camry Rolling Back on Hills

Hey Guys!

So I drive up a hill everyday and usually, the Camry does not roll back down the hill. When I used to release my foot from the brake to hit the gas, the Camry would not roll back. Even if I just released my foot off the brake, the car would just stop.

However, now the car rolls back if I don't have my foot on the brake. What could be the problem with the car? Also, how can this be fixed and would it be a cheap fix?

Thanks!

Does your car act funny in first gear? Meaning, does your car move when on a level surface? Might be what just happened to me tonight. My tranny is slipping =/ unfortunately if this is the case, it is not cheap. I'm thinking of selling it and looking for an es300.

Oo. I actually have an automatic Camry. If the car is on a slight incline, then it doesn't roll back. However, if it's on a larger incline, then it rolls back even though it didn't used to.

Any suggestions?

Your car has 4 gears and is automatic. When in "drive" and without pressing the gas, it should move the car forward at a slow pace which is first gear. If it does not move/does not have any response when pressing the gas a little, it means your first gear is starting to slip.

Oh, thanks for the clarification! I have a 98 Camry LE

Yeah, I think the car does move when I place it in drive and don't apply any gas.

Well, I may just be paranoid. I was moving at 1-2mph (no gas applied) and then I accidentally shifted from drive to reverse to park (wandering hands). I'm not sure if this affected the car in any way.

What do you guys think? The car doesn't roll back on very small inclines that would normally roll back if I were in neutral. However, it now rolls back on this hill where it used to not roll back.

Thanks again!

I don't know about that whole "wandering hands" deal. Don't you have to hold down the brakes and press the button on the side of your lever? When changing gears like that, you have to allow the clutch plate to grab by just waiting a few seconds, why you rolled back was probably because it went into neutral as you were shifting through. Try again some other time and if it does it again, it may be a problem just waiting to surface.
