I've done this several months back. From what i remember the shaft toward the front of the engine has a couple of "gears" toward the passenger side and as i remember these are positioned to line up and a bolt is put in place to keep them from turning relative to one another. Once locked in place the manual gives a specific order for loosening the bolts; this keeps the stress on the shaft evenly distributed so it doesn't get bent. Definately consult the manual but i believe the knock pin alignment described has to do with getting the "gears" aligned so you can lock them together with a bolt.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but if you're replacing the head gasket, i don't think there's a need for you you to remove your cams. Just lock them in place, slip the timing belt off and unbolt the head from the block in the correct sequence.

yup! toyota in notorious for doing this, but in order to take the head off, cams HAVE to come off. The head bolts are underneath the cam shafts and are usually a 12pt nut. i removed my 4age head and my 7afe head...its a pain you have have to remove the head bolts in a specific order also
