2.2l engine noise

Hello ladies and gents, Im hoping to get some help for my 01 camery with a 2.2. The engine when started makes a loud metallic knock on what seems to be the top end, its there constantly and speeds up and slows down with engine rpm. Crazy thing is that the motor runs fine other than the knock. Ive tried changing the oil to no avail. The best that I can tell its coming from the front portion of the engine somewhere in the valve train. Any and all help would be greatly appriciated.

It may be a frayed timing belt hitting the cover at the top end. Any idea as to when it was changed? On '01's they're good for 90K miles.

I just looked at the belt as a friend of mine suggested something similar it looks okay (not frayed but time to be replaced: cracking). Taking a closer listen it really sounds like its coming from the valve train, but Im just not sure how since I read that this is a non inerferance motor. Could it be a lifter or spring?

I had a 96 5sfe, that made a similar noise, and it ended up being the Timing Belt tensioner. Be sure to replace that with the TB.

Just so you know, you can't see the timing belt, it's behind the plastic cover on the far left side of the engine (looking from the front of the car). The belts that are visible are the alternator, ps, ac drive belts. If you do a search on timing belts you'll find lot's of info including a DIY replacement.
