Unhappy a/c cools for some time and then blows hot air

Hi!

I have a 96 camry LE with 87K miles on it.

Till not A/C was working perfectly but now it starts by giving very cool air just like it should. After about half an hour it stops giving cool air. Depending on outside temperature it starts giving hot/ warm air.

I am South FL, so during afternoon when it is sunny it feels as if heating is on at max.

I am hoping it will not be very expensive repair. Will I be able to fix this problem my self? If not how much it can cost?

Just for your info:
About 2 months back the screeching sound started - just when I start my car and start a/c it gives a screeching sound for first few min. According to what I have read here and on other sites - most likely it is because of the belt - I have not changed the belt yet.

Thanks,

Niks

So, check belt condition/tension and change/tighten if necessary.

^+1 The screeching sound is likely due to the AC/alternator belt slipping. I have had to tighten mine a couple times after replacing the belt last August. The belt is cheap (< $20) and it is easy to change. I would try that first. I think the belt stretches a bit after awhile, so you may need to tighten it up a bit like I did.

Thanks for your replies. I am going to change the belt very soon.
But do you think that ac stops cooling because of the belt?

I think there is an RPM counter for the compressor, if it slips then the A/C stops working. Could also be compressor clutch. If not then get pressures checked.
