i would STRONGLY recommend against it.... Any reputable shop should be able to rebuild it and you should be able to get the parts from your local toyota dealership. It cost under $20 for the parts to rebuild my starter and only took about an hour

Most of the time it's the <$15 brush set that needs replacing. If you have bearing issues those can be replaced but need tools. And if you add labor for a shop then might as well consider getting a rebuilt.

Otherwise I'd consider a rebuilt, like the $138+shipping (12th VIN Digit = 0):

There are a couple of different ones. Make sure you pick the right one.

I would recommend taking your alternator to a local shop that would rebuild it for you. Check the local yellow pages for "auto electrical rebuilders." IMHO, I have seen shops like this do a better job of rebuilding alternators and starters than the bulk rebuilders who auto parts stores use, and you will have your original Toyota alternator back in the car. YMMV.

I think that when my alternator finally gives up the ghost (bearings are too much of a pain to remove) I'll be replacing it with one fresh from the dealer.

I am usually all for using reman parts, but this alt has over 200,000 miles on it without ever being rebuilt, and I seriously abuse it daily (1500W RMS subwoofer amp). I don't know of any reman alt that can do anything close to that, heck I had a $550 300amp ford 3G in my car for a few weeks and sitting next to the converter killed the bearings.

The Denso price I gave was from rockauto.com, but there is the hassle of shipping back to core in order not to pay core price.

I actually pick up NAPA rebuilts locally (or you can use new Bosch with lifetime warranty) but cost more. For convenience reasons only, in case of warranty claims. Personally, I'd stay away from Autolite or other lesser brands.
