Brakes dont work on my Gen 3 camry

Earlier today when I was driving to school, I tried to apply the breaks but the car would not stop. I had drive extremely slow and use the hand breaks to drive to school and back (~45 miles round trip, not my best idea). I took the car to a mechanic who says the lines that carry the break fluid (or what ever) has broken. He says it will cost $150 to replace lines. Is that a good price? or is this an easy repair to do on my own for a fraction of the cost?

If he's replacing them make sure he show u the old ones and bleeding the brakes also part of the cost. if it is then thats pretty reasonable.

did the mecahnic mention whether its for the front or back? is he replacing the whole line or just the bad section? if the rear lines rusted through, odds are the fuel lines are about to go and will probably do so when the brake lines are replaced. just a heads up.

He did not mention if it was the front or the rear. He just replaced both of the lines. How do the fuel lines come into play with the break lines?

sounds like you are going to be replacing the brake and fuel lines. they run together in a little plastic shield. they corrode together and after about 10 to 12 years, need to be replaced. condensation and rain water sits right in front of the gas tank underneath the car on the lines, and this is where they leak first. the brake lines go first due to higher pressure inside them. when they are replaced, your corroded fuel lines will break. do yourself a favor and just replace them all at the same time. put the vehicle up in the air, pull the plastic back and you will see your blistered lines.

I see... So is this an easy job to do on my own? I dont want to fork over another $150 if I can just do it myself.

in canada, you would probably be looking at buying the oem parts for approx $350 to $450. if you were going to make them, probably $40 for brake line, plus $50 for a flaring kit, plus fuel lines, which you can't make. you will need a hoist. as far as time... my best was about four hours doing it properly. making your own lines and if it is your first time, expect about 10 hours. make sure you use a double flare, or else they will leak.

lol i thought it was as simple as just using a couple of rubber tubing's along with some clamps. looks like i will have to ask my mechanic if he replaced the fuel lines when he replaced the brake lines. Otherwise I will be putting down another $150...

I say $150 is a steal...I just had this done, and 2 new front lines ended up being around $300 incl. labor....then again, I'm in hawaii and everything is more expensive here.
