Question Cost to replace left axle?

Does anyone have an idea how much I should expect to be charged to replace the left axle? One repair shop told me the axle is $110 and the labor is $65. However, I found an axle off of Rockauto.com for $50.79 + S&H.
Does it sound like this particular guy from the repair shop is trying to rip me off?

And could I attempt to do it myself without needing a lift? I kinda want to save the labor money and accomplish the job myself, but as a novice I don't exactly know too much about removing the axle. Is there a DIY for this?

1.You can do it yourself.

2.The shop is most likely not trying to rip you off. Look on Autozone or Advance Auto. The cost on an axle is about $100. Remember, when you get you parts local you are paying extra to have it readily available. Rock Auto you must order everything and wait for it. 1hr labor isn't bad at all to do that job.

That sounds about right, actually. Dealer will run you about $350.

The thing is a new "aftermarket" halfshaft is about $80 or so, and comes with a lifetime warranty. A "rebuilt" OEM is about $60 like you found, and usually comes with a 1 year warranty.

I know some rather get a rebuilt OEM than a new aftermarket. I'd make sure you get a namebrand rebuilt instead of a "garage rebuilt".

Yes, you do. Make sure both sides are on the stands before you trying to remove the sway bar links. Otherwise it's loaded and can cause some damage. You're also going to need a 1/2"-drive 2-foot breaker bar and a torque wrench for tightening the axle nut. Plus maybe a pry bar.

Hey, I hope your mechanic uses a torque wrench! Well, at least I do when I swap them.
