3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I've got a 96 Camry with 148,500 miles on it. The car drives like a dream...but it has an oil leak. The timing belt needs to be done along with the seals, water pump, and accessory belts.
Tires are gonna need to be replaced before winter.
Other than that..the car is perfect. The exterior has a few scratches but I waxed it and it looks very clean. A/C is working. Moonroof, power everything, automatic trans.
How much could I ask for this car on craigslist without completely ripping someone off? I'm gonna be honest and tell them about the timing, etc.

I'd see what value you come up with on both sites, then look and see what similar Camry's are listed for in your area on Craigslist. That will give you a good basis for determining a figure.
Camry's with comparable mileage and all maintenance done go for about 2,500-3,000 in my area. I was thinking 1,750 would be a fair price to ask for a Camry desperately needing a timing belt job.

What are you going to do for wheels if you sell it?
I'm 17, I don't really need a car. My dad bought this one for me unaware of the timing belt situation (owner said his father had the records and he didn't know anything. What a bunch of bullshat...).

Shop around dude, you can get done what it needs cheaper than that!
I never knew of a 17y/o that didn't need a car??
My son, just turned 15 yesterday, and can't wait till he's 16 so he can drive himself, and not depend on me and Mom to get him around.
He wants me to check out a RED 92 prelude he's found for sale already!
Well of course I'd like a car, but this is a lot of money to throw at it.
I wouldn't mind paying it, the car is great and I love it. Problem is, I can't find a job. 25 applications, 4 months, and not a single call back. :/ I don't feel right asking my dad to pay for all the service costs.
I found a guy on craigslist doing work in my area. He said he'd do it for 200 dollars provided I bring the parts. That's cheap...but I don't know if I can trust someone like that.

to the OP...
I got my '96 LE 4cyl with an oil leak and right around 150k miles. It also needed new belts and a timing job/timing chain replacement. Power everything, but no sunroof. Exterior had a few scratches, but good overall. I payed $2000 for it and had all the repair work done for $800 out the door. Just food for thought.
Joe, get your son AWAY from the Prelude! ....not that there's anything wrong with hondas...

I bet you Dad appreciates you not taking advantage of his kindness, but maybe you could give him an IOU until you find work. Don't give up,the son has been Lifeguarding all summer.
Ask the Craiglist dude for references, maybe your Dad could talk to him. You may have found your savior right there!

He should spend a bit of time of this forum...
Tell him he's better off with a uncle/granny pampered Camry, than a beat-up prelude!!!
He was the reason for me buying Birds Coupe and restoring it, but he wasn't interested, and I couldn't stand the thought of him destroying it.
You know? First time drivers...so Rob got it back.
BTW he is a member here...Eyeballjr..not in to cars like it Dad tho, and doesn't post much, he missed that gene!

You had a 5s? Wow. And i'm a sucker for crew cab trucks myself.
OP... here's an idea as far as finding a job goes. Trying walking into a local temp agency. That's what I did. They got me a job working in mechanical assembly for $9.25/hr....great for any teenager during these times IMO. My advice is to go into the temp office and talk to them... let them know your interested and want a job. Here's the agency I used: http://www.adeccousa.com/pages/OfficeLocator.aspx
2 offices in a 25 mile radius of greater Chicago.
