rear speaker install - 1999 camry

I'm trying to remove the rear deck from my 1999 camry so I can install new speakers. I've been following the directions in a thread about removing the deck from a 2000 camry, but it looks like the 1999 might be a little different. There are four white hooks in the 1999, not three. And there doesn't seem to be any way to push them out without breaking them (I've already broken two of the four), and it doesn't look like it would accomplish anything even if I could push the other two out, because from the shape of the hooks and how they're oriented it doesn't look like they're the reason the panel won't slide out.

It looks like the side trim panels must come out for the deck to slide out. I've pulled on the deck about as hard as I can and it doesn't budge. I've bent the deck pulling on it -- no serious damage to the deck, but it's not coming out.

I tried searching for instructions on removing the side panels but can't find anything. It seems like there's something else, other than the hooks and side panels, but I can't figure out what it could be. I popped the two white round clips out -- no problem there.

Also, the 2000 thread says to remove the "black thingy". I'm not able to do that in a 1999 without first removing the deck. The black thingy is tucked under the deck and doesn't seem to be restricting removal of the deck at all.

I now like everything about my Camry except for how ridiculously difficult it is to get this deck out.
