A540E transmission issue

I have a '94 3VZ-FE camry (New Zealand model) with a A540E transmission.
Driving home today and suddenly (was working fine this morning) noticed that when pulling away from the lights the car was really sluggish when the transmission was in 'D' (OD on). The OD light was also flashing. Wondering what the issue was, I pulled over and checked the fluid level first off and that was fine. Then decided to drive off from a stop and manually shift (Moving the shifter from L to 2 to D (OD off) then D (OD on) and there was none of the previous sluggishness. When up to cruising tried the manual shifting down and it was normal as well. So when moving off from a stop with the trans in D (OD on) it would seem that the trans is starting off in 2nd gear instead of 1st, hence the sluggishness.
Any ideas on what may be causing this? Anyone had a similar issue?

*UPDATE*Got a good deal on a BRAND NEW transmission for my car which Toyota will give me for the same price as a used/restored one because of it's age and the fact it's the last new one availbale in New Zealand!!!Because it's new it also comes with a 24 month warranty...what a score.
