Cig lighter works for the lighter, but not for a cellphone charger

Hi there

I have a 1996 Toyota Camry with a strange problem.
The Cigarette Lighter works perfectly when I push in the cigarette lighter.
i.e. It gets hot in less than 20 seconds!

However if I try a cellphone car charger in there, it just wont work.
No little light or anything.

I've tried several chargers in there and all of them work on other cars besides the Camry.

Any suggestions?

Hmmh. Dunno, I've had at least 4 different cell chargers and they all worked fine in both of my '95 Camrys...

The socket is likely messed up.

Do you think changing the Lighter socket will fix the problem?
Is it not something else to do with the fuse?

Pop off the bracket and look at the cabling in the back. When I looked there were 2 connectors. Maybe one of them controls the back panel (the part that makes contact with the cigarette lighter) and one controls the side wall. Hey, it's worth a shot.

i've seen sockets get corroded if someone uses the actual lighter a lot. that corrosion prevents making a good contact to the small center pin on a power adapter, but since the actual lighter is much larger it can still make contact. look down inside the socket to make sure nothing is corroded/rusted or gunked up with ash or something. if it is, clean with a wire brush or pick.
