93 camry overheating with a/c on

my camry v6 has been overheating with a/c in traffic, it usually starts heating when i start even when the a/c is off but doesn't get to bad, when the a/c gets turned on thats when it likes to make me mad.,

so far ive gotten the air out of the radiator and replaced the coolant, the radiator was replaced not to long ago. ive checked the leaks, my mechanic checked the auxillary fan and said it was fine. any ideas of what it could be?

First thing:

You losing coolant mate? If so, check the overflow tank... check for leaks and see if any hoses need re-attaching.

The next thing I'd be checking is the radiator cap and the neck filler cap next to the engine. If the rubber or the pressure release valve in these are even remotely damaged, then I'm not surprised.

If you aren't losing any coolant, take the neck filler cap off and top the coolant up til you can see it right at the top. If you have bubbles, let the car idle until ALL the bubbles are gone (this goes for even the most minute bubbles you can see). I normally squeeze the hose from the radiator to the neck filler to help it along a little.

The next thing could either be a blockage in the cooling system somewhere or maybe the waterpump isn't doing as good of a job that it should do. If you get to that stage, replace the water pump and do the timing belt, seals and bearings in the idler pulleys and the likes.

Good luck mate.

also is ur fans coming on? if not u can bypass the fans to the battery and see if they come on if so. u might want to replace the fan switch. i had to replace mine twice. that will make u run hot too

Not sure if you can do this on a 3VZ mate... they're not electric fans.

ive decided to install an eletric fan into the system, the other fan spins but extremely slowly, and correct me if im wrong but does the auxillary fan run by power steering fluid because the hose led from the fan to the power steering fluid

Yeah mate... 3VZs use the power steering fluid to operate the fan. There's a solenoid at the power steering pump that controls the flow of the p/s fluid through the fan to make it go faster once it gets hot enough. The ECU sends a signal to that solenoid to activate a faster rate if need be. (Someone correct me if I'm wrong!)

So - the fan doesn't use electricity to run. It's a hydraulic fan ultimately.

Yeah my 3vz's fan can be stopped with my hand at operating temperature and during revs. I'm thinking something may be wrong inside the...I guess it would be called a motor even though its hydraulic. Anyone ever take these apart to see what device is used to make them spin? I'm thinking a fan of some sort, like a windmill. Either way its what killed my engine last time, nice cool A/C then all of a sudden I looked like an over heating NASCAR vehicle with steam and anti freeze coming out of my reservoir.

i think its just pressure from the fluid going through the hoses, i installed a 200$ electric fan into it which has a small thermometer which tells the fan when to turn on and off, its worked fine, left my car running on the beach with a/c in horrible traffic for about 45 mins and the needle never went up. so glad that problems over with, now if only my car wouldn't bog in the mornings........

I'm yet to hear of the welsh plug on the radiator needing to be replaced. Generally these cooling systems are bulletproof... but that never stops the headgaskets that keep blowing... quite common.

If everything else seems to be ok, I'd be checking the solenoid and temp sensor for the cooling...

Cheap check and change is the thermostat. Do this before proceeding with the more expensive stuff.
